Access Tips
1. Locate the historical context for the passage, which will greatly enhance your understanding of it, by:
a. Looking for clues in the passage.
b. Discovering the context using a commentary or study bible.
c. Cross-reference the characters/events mentioned in the passage with the setting in the historical books
(mostly Kings, Chronicles, Ezra or Nehemiah) using an on-line keyword search or a concordance.
2. Now look for the content of the prophet's message.
a. What main point is the prophet trying to communicate to the original hearers?
b. What images or metaphors is the prophet using? Prophets use some of the most vivid imagery in all of scripture.
i. How would those images have struck the first hearers?
ii. How do those images affect you?
c. Ask yourself: what light is the prophet trying to shed on the situation He is addressing?
i. Would that light have seemed like light to the original hearers?
ii. Does it seem like light to you? Why or why not?
What light is God trying to shine into my darkness here and now? How will I respond to it?
