A Different Kind of Story
Trinity exists to lead a generation of people into life change through Jesus Christ. It’s church for people who don’t go to church. Founded in 2000, Trinity has grown to become home for hundreds of families just like yours.
Trinity was founded in 2000, but its history goes back to 1840, when Scottish immigrants founded a church in Guthrie, Ontario. By 1890, there were five other Presbyterian churches in the township of Oro, and in 1894, the congregations of Central, St. Andrew’s and Guthrie Presbyterian churches became a three point charge and remained so until Trinity was formed in 2000.
Most of the 20th century met with mixed success in reaching people with the news about Christ among the three churches. By 1995, worship attendance among all three congregations totaled 50 people per weekend.
In 1995, encouraged by the godly leadership of George Cunningham, the congregations called Carey Nieuwhof to be their student pastor. Over the next five years, a vision for ministry developed that involved reclaiming the biblical mission of the church, and creating an environment where people who didn’t go to church could meet Jesus Christ. In 1998, the congregations voted to sell their current buildings and build a new church on a new site with a new mission and a new name, and in 2000, Trinity came into existence.
The new congregation spent 2000-2003 worshipping in a school, where it grew from one service to three weekend services. In January 2003 Trinity moved into a new 18,000 square foot facility and opened its doors with two Sunday services. Since 2003, the church has grown from over 300 people in weekend attendance to almost 900. In March 2006, Trinity added a third Sunday morning service to accommodate the number of people attending. Plans for a much-expanded future ministry are underway.
The story is simple. Jesus is alive and relevant, and Trinity is a congregation committed to helping every person discover for themselves who Christ is and everything He offers.
